Guided History Studies

Interest-Led Instruction for Adult Learners

A thoughtful exploration of history shaped by the interests of the learner.

This course is designed for adults who enjoy history and would like the opportunity to explore topics of personal interest in a supportive, guided learning environment. Rather than following a fixed syllabus, instruction is shaped collaboratively, allowing learners to focus on periods, regions, or themes that genuinely engage them.

Sessions are paced and discussion-oriented, with an emphasis on context, interpretation, and understanding historical connections. The course values curiosity and reflection over memorization, and welcomes learners with varying levels of prior knowledge.

Topics may include:

  • Historical periods or events chosen by the learner
  • Social, political, or cultural themes of interest
  • Connections between historical events and the present
  • Analysis of primary and secondary sources at an accessible level
  • Discussion of differing historical perspectives

This course is well suited for adults who enjoy learning for its own sake and appreciate the opportunity to explore history in a thoughtful, unhurried manner.
